Clubs, Bars, Parties and Events When we at Trans-MISSION were running regular monthly events, we developed a reputation for being a safe, relaxed and friendly environment for transvestites and cross-dressers to come and for them to bring their partners along without ‘freaking them out’. Since we stopped our regular events, one of the questions we get asked most frequently is, “Where is a safe and friendly place to go out as a tranny in the UK?
Many of the regular transgender events have more of a ‘hard edge’ than we used to and can be a little daunting to newcomers, first-timers and partners. If you’re after a completely ‘no risk’ place to go, then local meetings of the Beaumont Society tend to be very relaxed, but they also tend to be small and in some cases rather unexciting and cliquey and for these reasons they may not be ideal, especially for wives and partners.
Of the remaining clubs, some are there almost purely for transvestites and transexuals interested in ‘getting it on’ with each other or with admiring males, some have undertones of this but are more mainstream and some are genuinely nice places to go. Transvestite and cross-dressing events come and go with alarming irregularity – we try and keep our links page up to date where we can, so hopefully you will find the places we list still open! We’ve tried to add a short description to the tranny-friendly bars, clubs and events listed below to give you an idea of what they are like.
One good place to try to find out what’s going on is Roses Forum which despite the rather flowery name is one of the most active, welcoming and up-to-date transgender chat forums in the UK.

Celtic tribes[ edit ] Early inhabitants of Yorkshire were Celts , who formed two separate tribes, the Brigantes and the Parisi. The tribe controlled most of Northern England and more territory than any other Celtic tribe in England. That they had the Yorkshire area as their heartland is evident in that Isurium Brigantum now known as Aldborough was the capital town of their civitas under Roman rule.
Six of the nine Brigantian poleis described by Claudius Ptolemaeus in the Geographia fall within the historic county. Initially, this situation suited both the Romans and the Brigantes, who were known as the most militant tribe in Britain. Queen Cartimandua left her husband Venutius for his armour bearer, Vellocatus , setting off a chain of events which changed control of the Yorkshire area. Cartimandua, due to her good relationship with the Romans, was able to keep control of the kingdom; however her former husband staged rebellions against her and her Roman allies.

Paperback The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould – is today mostly remembered as the writer of the hymn “Onward, Christian Soldiers” but during his lifetime he was well known not only as a churchman but also as a novelist, scholar and author of works of non-fiction. Although a native of Devon, he spent a considerable portion of his life in Yorkshire, where he was a curate, and this book mostly consists of a series of potted biographies of various eccentric Yorkshiremen and women, although a few chapters are given over to ghost stories or accounts of notorious crimes.
The longest chapter is dedicated to Jonathan Martin, who became notorious for attempting to burn down York Minster. Martin was originally from Northumberland, but Baring-Gould justifies his inclusion here by pointing out that he spent most of his life in Yorkshire and that his crime was committed in the county. Martin appears to have been motivated by religious fanaticism and a hatred of the Anglican establishment, and was not pleased when his brother, the celebrated painter John Martin, paid for a barrister to conduct a defence on the grounds of insanity.
Baring-Gould, himself a priest of the Established Church, would not, on the evidence of this book, appear to have had much time for nonconformists; he rarely misses an opportunity to portray them as either fanatics or hypocrites. About the criminal Snowden Dunhill he writes: The eighteenth-century eccentric Jemmy Hirst, who cheerfully admitted to having had no religion at all, comes across as a far more congenial character.
The length of the entries varied greatly; some individuals are dismissed in a couple of paragraphs whereas others have around thirty pages dedicated to them. Baring-Gould seemed to have little gift for paraphrasing his sources, as some passages give the impression of having been copied more or less verbatim from some earlier publication, as the language at times can seem stilted and outdated even by the standards of the s.
He produced over a thousand publications in the course of his long life, so must have written many of them in a hurry. Some chapters are definitely overlong. Did we really need so much information, for example, on the life and doings of Blind Jack Metcalf of Knaresborough?
